Dr. Seuss returns with newly discovered book

Maria Puente, USA TODAY:

Dr. Seuss long ago passed from the scene but old manuscripts by the beloved children’s author keep turning up.

Random House Children’s Books said Wednesday it will publish a recently discovered manuscript with Dr. Seuss sketches, called What Pet Should I Get?, on July 28.

The publisher plans at least two more books based on materials found in 2013 by his widow, Audrey Geisel, and his secretary in the author’s home in the ritzy seaside neighborhood of La Jolla in San Diego.

Apple to make cars?

Tags

, , , ,

The news Friday that Apple has up to 1,000 employees actively working on some kind of car — a kind of “electric minivan,” not just software in the dashboard — set off a nuclear bomb of speculation, jokes and lukewarm takes. At one extreme came the Detroit-centric reaction, the “oh, this carbuilding business is sooo hard and costly” view, which felt dated when it was deployed against Preston Tucker. From the left coast came the Silicon Valley excitement at impending disruption and the potential profits, epitomized by investor Jason Calacanis predicting Apple will buy Tesla for $75 billion in 18 months.

Those extremes have a fingertip grip in reality; car building is hard, which is why Tesla was the first successful U.S. automaker start-up since the Dodge Brothers in the 1920s, and won’t be profitable until 2020. MORE:

How photoshirts are made.

The Process:
When you want to have photos, artwork or designs printed on t-shirts. The image is printed on a professional heat transfer medium from a commercial color printer and applied to the t-shirts using a commercial heat press at 350-395 degrees for between 10 – 35 seconds depending on image size. Tee’s are made one at a time to insure quality.

The photo is placed onto the t-shirt usually front and center and pressed with high temperatures and pressure to fuse the ink so it will bond with the fabric. The transfer backing is then peeled off the shirt while it is hot, leaving the image permanently imprinted on the shirt. This gives the print a screen print feel {soft hand} with unlimited color range!

Heat transfer shirts, are usually visually indistinguishable from screen printed shirt.

U.S. had plans to nuke the moon

Wow!

CNN Security Clearance

By Brian Todd and Dugald McConnell

You could easily skip by it in an archive search: a project titled “A Study of Lunar Research Flights.” Its nickname is even more low-brow: “Project A-119.”

But the reality was much more explosive.

It was a top-secret plan, developed by the U.S. Air Force, to look at the possibility of detonating a nuclear device on the moon.

It was hatched in 1958 — a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a nuclear arms race that would last decades and drive the two superpowers to the verge of nuclear war. The Soviets had also just launched Sputnik 1, the world’s first satellite. The U.S. was falling behind in the space race, and needed a big splash.

Dear Wrigley Field Supporters,

We wanted to keep you updated on the progress toward renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field. Today, crews will begin relocating underground public works and utility infrastructure in preparation for the renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field.

The City of Chicago Department of Water Management, Peoples Gas and Commonwealth Edison will be performing work to relocate underground water, sewer and gas lines. This work will take place under the street and the parkway on the east side of Sheffield Avenue.

Sheffield Avenue will be completely closed from Thursday (8/28) through Sunday (8/31) for excavation and installation of a new main and service to the residences and businesses. Beginning Tuesday, September 2, the parkway and east lane of traffic will be closed from 8 am until two hours prior to the start of each Wrigley Field event. CDOT will allow work to proceed on game days but all work, equipment and personnel will be off site a minimum of two hours prior to the start of each Wrigley Field event.

The utility companies do not anticipate any major service disruptions. If there are disruptions to service, the utility companies will attempt to contact property owners directly.

We appreciate your patience and understanding and look forward to continuing to communicate the progress of our exciting plans for renovation and expansion of Wrigley Field. We appreciate your support and look forward to continuing to work with you to make Wrigleyville a great place to live, work and visit.

Sea plankton discovered outside space station – from grindtv.com

Russian scientists make the odd find while doing experiments on ISS surface:

STS-132

Russian scientists conducting experiments on the outside surface of the International Space State made a puzzling discovery, one made all the more remarkable because it’s something that whales eat.

Samples taken from illuminators and the surface of the space station were found to have traces of sea plankton and other microorganisms, but scientists are baffled as to how they got there, the Russian chief of the orbital mission told the ITAR-TASS News Agency.

“Results of the experiment are absolutely unique,” chief of the Russian ISS orbital mission Vladimir Solovyev told ITAR-TASS. “We have found traces of sea plankton and microscopic particles on the illuminator surface. This should be studied further.”

The study shows that the sea plankton and organisms can live in space despite lack of oxygen, zero gravity, extreme temperatures, and cosmic radiation, and they proved these organisms can even develop.

More from Will Stewart in Moscow for the U.K. Express:

The news agency reported that Mr. Solovyev was uncertain “how these microscopic particles could have appeared on the surface of the space station,” adding that the organisms were not typical for Baikonur in Kazakhstan, from where the space station lifted off.

“Plankton in these stages of development could be found on the surface of the oceans.

“This is not typical for Baikonur. It means that there are some uplifting air currents which reach the station and settle on its surface,” he was quoted as saying.
The discovery was made using high-precision equipment in the experiment, apparently prompted during an operation to clean and polish the International Space Station, the Express reported.

As Solovyev said, this should be studied further.
